Press conference of the second phase of the IPBSL project

Luis Cuesta Crespo, head of the Scientific Culture Unit of the CAB, Felipe Gómez Gómez, CAB researcher in the Department of Planetology and Habitability, and José Antonio Rodríguez Manfredi, head of the CAB's Instrumentation Department spoke at the press conference. br>
In the press conference the process that is being carried out to design and test the adequate probes to study the metabolic activity and the geomicrobiological parameters (acidity, reducing potential, conductivity and gas concentration) has been explained. ions) in the subsoil of Río Tinto. This study supposes, in addition, an instrumental challenge when designing the detectors able to resist the conditions of Rio Tinto and to provide this information in an autonomous way.

The probes are going to be distributed along the wells to different depths to have a real-time estimate of the variation of biological activity and the rest of the parameters with depth. In addition, they will provide this data for a prolonged period of time which is a great step forward as it will be the first time that the temporal evolution of this activity is studied.
