Spain builds the first meteorological network of Mars

The NASA Curiosity rover made an amazing discovery in April on one of its walks on the surface of Mars. The vehicle's REMS (Rover Environmental Monitoring Station) instrument discovered evidence of very salty water in an arid area during the Martian sunset. This device is a complete meteorological station with multiple environmental sensors, result of the joint work of the Spanish company CRISA and the Astrobiology Center (CAB, CSIC-INTA).

From the landing of the Curiosity in August 2012, the instrument is part of the Spanish contribution to the exploration of Mars by continuously sending to Earth data reception centers key information to investigate weather on the red planet. The performance of the system pleased NASA that it has decided to install two improved versions of the meteorological station on its next exploration missions to Mars.

REMS has sensors that measure the temperature of the air and the ground, the direction and wind speed, relative humidity, pressure and ultraviolet radiation. In addition, it has its own control station with an on-board computer. The environmental monitoring station takes data 24 hours a day, even when the rover is off. "It is working well, there was a problem in the landing with a wind sensor that was damaged by particles, but it was possible to take measures with the other arm", explains the leading engineer of CRISA Systems, José Moreno. < p> ...
