Title: The dust return from AGB stars in nearby galaxies

Abstract: Dust is ubiquitous in the interstellar medium (ISM) and, despite making up only a tiny fraction of its mass, plays a major role in a variety of physical processes. Supernovae (SNe) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are the major stellar sources of dust in galaxies, with AGB stars dominating the dust input at later times (>~0.5 Gyr). It is crucial to quantify and characterise the AGB dust injection in order to understand the life cycle of dust in galaxies.

Determining the current rate of AGB dust production requires information about the spectral energy distributions (SEDs), especially in the infrared. While large-scale studies of the Galactic AGB dust budget have been restricted to the Bulge or the Solar Neighbourhood, data from the Spitzer Space Telescope has enabled the identification of large populations of AGB stars in nearby galaxies such as the Magellanic Clouds, allowing us to estimate the current AGB dust budget in these systems. These studies find that the dust production is dominated by a small fraction of very dusty, highly evolved AGB stars. However, the dust injection rates estimated for these systems appears to be too small to explain the observed interstellar dust masses (the Dust Budget "Crisis").

In this talk, I will describe our team's work on the AGB dust budget in the Magellanic Clouds, and ongoing work in other galaxies. I will also discuss possible solutions to the dust budget "crisis".
