A recent study, led by the Center for Astrobiology (CAB), CSIC-INTA, describes a novel cold seep located at a depth of 2.5 km and in close proximity of the coast of Antofagasta, Chile. This site is inhabited by a wide variety of microorganisms involved in the cycling of sulfur, carbon and nitrogen, among other elements. Unlike in most previously described cold seeps, no evidence of methane seepage or consumption has been found in the region, establishing the site as sulfur-sustained cold seep of substantial microbiological and astrobiological interest.
