Resumen: The perennial red alga Furcellaria lumbricalis occurs in cold waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. The environments differ in their salinity, some being clearly marginal for the species. Population genetic structures of populations originating from variable geographical locations and salinity conditions were compared using neutral and coding markers. Big differences between the marker types were detected and markers from coding regions showed considerable differentiation. Although no conclusive evidence of selection was detected, the level of differentiation indicates the presence of other evolutionary factors than genetic drift. Furthermore, a view of great differentiation between marine and brackish populations is supported.
