Postdoctoral position at UCM (deadline November 1 2013)
The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) in Spain
welcomes applications for two post-doctoral positions at the
Department of Astrophysics to work on the study of the
formation and evolution of galaxies at different redshifts
using data from multi-wavelength cosmological
surveys. Candidates must hold a PhD in Astronomy or Physics,
and experience in multiwavelength data reduction and
analysis. The position is for one year starting in early
2014, with a very likely extension to one more year. The salary
will be 2150-2350€ (depending on experience) per month
before taxes (12 monthly payments per year).
The research will focus on the analysis of the data taken
within the
SHARDS
project (Survey for High-z Absorption Read and Dead
Sources). SHARDS is an ESO/GTC Large Program approved in
2009A and carried out during 20 nights in 2010-2013. It
consists in imaging observations of the entire GOODS-North
region in 24 medium-band different filters with the
GTC/OSIRIS instrument, covering the wavelength range between
500 and 950 nm with contiguous passbands. The postdoc will
participate in the source cataloging, merging with other
datasets, production of advanced data products, and
scientific analysis of the data.
SHARDS is being funded through the 2013-2015 period by the
PNAyA
Program managed by the Spanish Government through the
project with code AYA2012-31277. The funding for these two
positions starting in early 2014 has been approved by the
Spanish Government to be delivered in a yearly basis, so
continued funding to extend the positions up to two years
(until the end of 2015) should be secure (subject to
performance evaluation).
The main scientific goal of SHARDS is carrying out an
unbiased spectro-photometric survey of passively evolving
galaxies at 1.0<z<2.5 and measuring stellar population ages
through the direct measurement absorption indices. It will
also be useful for other observational studies of galaxy
formation and evolution including, e.g., detailed analysis
of stellar population and AGN activity of intermediate and
high-redshift galaxies.
The postdoc will have the opportunity to work in her/his own
research for 15% of the time, and collaborate with the
researchers within the
UCM Group of Extragalactic Astrophysics and
Instrumentation. The postdoc will have access through
Spanish time to facilities such as the GTC, ING and CAHA
telescopes, and also to ESO observatories.
