History of the IAU astrochemistry symposia
- 1979. IAU Symposium 87. "Interstellar Molecules" took place in Mt. Tremblant, Canada, signaling the start of the rapid development of the field of astrochemistry. Following its success, the working group on "Astrochemistry" was established under IAU Commission 34/Division VI on Interstellar Matter, whose main activities are to ensure that scientific meetings are regularly held.
- 1985. IAU Symposium 120. "Astrochemistry" was the first meeting organized by the IAU working group and it was held in Goa, India.
- 1991. IAU Symposium 150. "Astrochemistry of Cosmic Phenomena" was held in Brazil and was attended by 120 scientists from 19 countries.
- 1996. IAU Symposium 178. ""Molecules in Astrophysics: Probes and Processes" was held in Leiden, the Netherlands and was attended by 231 participants from 27 countries
- 1999. IAU Symposium 197. "Astrochemistry - From Molecular Clouds to Planetary Systems" was held in Sogwipo, South Korea. The meeting was attended by 262 scientists representing 25 countries.
- 2005. IAU Symposium 231. "Astrochemistry Throughout the Universe: Recent Successes and Current Challenges" was held in Asilomar, in California, USA. The meeting was attended by 305 scientists from 28 countries.
