I will introduce the ESA Gaia mission and its second data release, DR2, consisting of astrometry, photometry, radial velocities, and information on astrophysical parameters and variability, for sources in the Galaxy and Local Group brighter than magnitude 21. A summary of the contents is presented, together with an overview of some initial scientific results.
